Today, Shutterstock, an American provider of stock photography, stock footage, stock music, and editing tools, announced that their collection of photos, vectors, and illustrations has reached over 100 million licensable images. Due to the dedication of 140,000 artists from over 100 countries, Shutterstock has grown their collection into an extensive source of fresh and vibrant imagery that tells us the world’s stories. To celebrate the momentous milestone, and as a testament of their community of contributors, Shutterstock has produced an infographic illustrating “The Top Ten Trends Shaping the Future of Imagery”.

Shutterstock’s curators, designers, photographers, and image review team share their predictions of the trends changing how we see the world of today and present the milestone as not how far they have come, but also how far they are going.

Some parts of the selection, like street photography, have been a benchmark in the industry for several decades. Others, like drone photography, have only made their way to the digital screen in the last few years. Altogether, “these image trends are changing the way people interact with machines, with each other, and with the environment”.

Some of the visual trends that are impacting the future of imagery include:

  • Crowdsourced Photojournalism – with improved mobile phone technology, particularly with the iPhone 7+ camera, eyewitness imagery is capturing the moments that define the news
  • 360 Photography – seeing the complete picture and creating an immersive image experience that can be explored from every angle
  • Daily Stories – the visual diaries popularized by Instagram and Snapchat that are elevating everyday life
