Alcohol and cars. Drinking and driving. Two seemingly contradictory concepts. Yet, some people think these two things can go hand-in-hand for a memorable night. And for a big percentage of those who mix them, the night can indeed become an unforgettable experience, because, in much of such cases, the fun ends in a tragic event.

In Argentina, the rate of car accidents has grown over 25% since last year. And alcohol consumption is the main cause for the majority of these incidents. Being one of the leading automotive brands in the country, Volkswagen Argentina thought of doing something creative, fun, tasty, and, most important of all, safe to overturn these horrible statistics into more positive ones.

More precisely, the brand wants to see the numbers to drop down to 0%. And it wants to achieve success with a new 0.0% alcohol beer. Yes, world, there is a beer that wears the Volkswagen’s name and, more importantly, is brewed to make people aware of possible effects of drinking and driving. Together with DDB Argentina, the automaker launched ‘VW Beer’, a non-alcoholic beer that’s intended to keep company to drivers who want to have fun and stay safe at the same time.

The first-of-its-kind brew was launched during a special event, which was held in a well-known bar in Buenos Aires. Throughout the party, all drivers who went out to have a good night but preferred to stay responsible and not consume any booze were rewarded with a cold, refreshing Volkswagen 0.0% alcohol beer.

One of the main challenges when crafting the beer was to create a golden beverage that is absolutely alcohol-free. As you may know by now, non-alcoholic beer does contain some alcohol but not enough to get you drunk. VW wanted a beer that has not even a single drop of alcohol in it. To develop the drink, the company teamed up with Barba Roja brewery and started its mission to design the perfect alcohol-less beer.

Together they tried for a couple of times, but the first two attempts were not successful. But you know what the old saying states: third time’s the charm! The last attempt was a success, as the partners got a beer that has both the right flavor and the right amount of alcohol, which (yeah, you’ve guessed it) is zero.

This might seem like a weird way to make a point about drinking and driving, but according to the Buenos Aires-based agency the idea behind the campaign “was to change the focus on how to raise awareness. Instead of showing the dangers of alcohol at the wheel, it was decided to reward responsible drivers when they go out at night and choose not to drink alcohol; with a cold Volkswagen 0.0% alcohol beer.”

Oh, how lovely it would be if someone greeted us with a VW beer after arriving to a bar, don’t you think? We’d definitely give it a try, but because it’s only available across Argentina, let’s feast our eyes with the case study made for the campaign.
